“Before leaving Assouan for Cairo, I had made an agreement with Hassib el Gabou, of the Dar Hamad section of the Kabbabish tribe, and Ali el Amin, from Wadi el Kab, to act as guides for us as far as Gebel Ain, where we hoped to find Sheikh Saleh.”

“Our party was to consist of Hogal, Hassib el Gabou, Ali el Amin, my Arabic clerk Elias, my female servant Hasseena, myself, and four men whom Hogal was to engage.”

ILLUSTRATED EPUB

A firsthand account of twelve years in captivity at Omdurman during one of the most turbulent periods in Sudanese history.

Charles Neufeld entered the desert in 1887 on a journey toward Kordofan. Betrayed by his guides and captured by Mahdist forces, he was taken to Omdurman, where he remained a prisoner until 1898. Written immediately after his release, this substantial 1899 memoir records the journey, the people he encountered, the conditions of imprisonment and daily life in the Mahdist capital.

The book is an important historical primary source, but it also reflects the colonial attitudes and vocabulary of its time. Nile Book Store preserves the original text for study while presenting it in a clean, navigable digital edition.
