“I’m not well, Florence. I sometimes doubt if I shall ever be any better.”
“Surely, uncle, you cannot mean——”
“Yes, my child, I have reason to believe that I am nearing the end.”
Description
Florence Linden has grown up in her rich uncle's house on Madison Avenue. When she refuses to marry her scheming cousin Curtis Waring, her uncle disinherits her and she must leave home and earn her own living. Her one friend is Dodger, a street boy who works for the keeper of a Bowery saloon and knows nothing of his own past.
Florence looks for work in the city while Curtis plots to keep the Linden fortune for himself, and Dodger is carried off by sea to San Francisco. One of Alger's later novels, it mixes his familiar New York setting with a missing-heir mystery.
