"How much yer made this mornin', Ben?"

"Nary red," answered Ben, composedly.

"Had yer breakfast?"

"Only an apple. That's all I've eaten since yesterday."

Description

Ben ran away from home at ten, after trouble with his stern father, and has lived on the New York streets for six years, earning a living by carrying travellers' luggage at the ferry and railroad wharves. The book follows his life among the street boys, including the hidden room under a wharf where they sleep, and the slow change that leads him back to the family who thought him dead.

The fifth book of the Ragged Dick Series (1870). In his preface Alger says the story is "in all essential points a true history," told to him by the boy himself.

Audiobook: unabridged LibriVox recording read by Tori Faulder, about 4 hours 4 minutes, in MP3 format (13 files plus one "download all" ZIP).

EPUB: complete text with a clickable table of contents, Alger's two original footnotes and the frontispiece from an early edition. The Art Nouveau cover illustration was made for this edition with AI.
