“Well, Fosdick, this is a little better than our old room in Mott Street,” said Richard Hunter, looking complacently about him.

“You’re right, Dick,” said his friend. “This carpet’s rather nicer than the ragged one Mrs. Mooney supplied us with. The beds are neat and comfortable, and I feel better satisfied, even if we do have to pay twice as much for it.”
🎧 Includes the full unabridged audiobook (LibriVox recording) along with the ePub.

Description

Ragged Dick is a street boot-black no longer. Now calling himself Richard Hunter, he has rooms in a respectable boarding-house with his friend Henry Fosdick, money in the savings bank and his first real job, in the counting-room of a merchant named Mr. Rockwell. His rise makes enemies: a jealous book-keeper, the snobbish Roswell Crawford, and his old street rival Micky Maguire. When a stolen pocket-book is slipped into Dick's pocket, he is marched off to the station-house and has to clear his name.

Published in 1868, Fame and Fortune is the second book of the Ragged Dick Series and follows straight on from Ragged Dick. Alger wrote in his preface that the series drew on his own observation of New York's street children.

Audiobook: unabridged LibriVox recording read by Alys AtteWater and Barry Eads, about 4 hours 34 minutes, in MP3 format (23 files plus one "download all" ZIP).

EPUB: complete text with a clickable table of contents, the illustrated title and three illustrations from the 1868 Loring edition. The Art Nouveau cover illustration was made for this edition with AI.
