The feeling of having escaped the oppressive, murky, dusty air of Khartoum, and of standing on the eve of an interesting journey, did much for the mood of us all. Coffee and pipes went round; the clear moon stood over our quiet camp, a fresh north breeze rippled the waves of the Nile, which only now and then rolled with a dull sound; we forged new plans for great undertakings to be carried out in the near future: Pruyssenaere meant to explore the upper region of the Blue Nile, Steudner and I the westernmost region of the White. We kept our word, but at a high price! One of my brave companions lies buried at Karkoj on the Bahr el-Azraq, the other by the river of Wau in the heart of Africa!

In 1862 the German naturalist Theodor von Heuglin set out from Khartoum with the botanist Hermann Steudner, first into East Kordofan, then up the White Nile and the Bahr el-Ghazal with the Tinne expedition. This is his own account, published in Leipzig in 1869, now in English for the first time.

Volume I covers September 1862 to March 1863: Khartoum under Turco-Egyptian rule, the hills of the Arash-Kol, the Hassaniya and Baqqara Arabs, the slave-trading base at Kaka, the Shilluk capital at Fashoda, Lake No and the long struggle through the papyrus to Meshra el-Req.

This edition includes:

  • a new introduction on Heuglin, the expedition, the slave trade he witnessed, and the language of his time;
  • the original plates and the colour route map of 1869;
  • Georg Schweinfurth's on-the-spot drawings of Meshra el-Req and a Dinka cattle camp;
  • all of Heuglin's footnotes.

Translated directly from the German original of 1869.
