Description
All 100 plates from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur (1899–1904), reproduced in full color from the original edition. A landmark of scientific illustration, Haeckel's symmetrical compositions of radiolarians, jellyfish, orchids, ferns, and creatures from across the natural world went on to shape Art Nouveau design — the jellyfish of Plate 8 remains one of the most reproduced scientific illustrations ever made. Each plate appears full-page with its plate number, genus, and taxonomic group.
Excerpt
Ernst Haeckel composed each plate as a symmetrical arrangement of related organisms, in the conviction that the same geometric and decorative principles that governed human art were already present, in full measure, in nature itself.
