“Fosdick,” said Richard Hunter, “what was the name of that man who owed your father two thousand dollars, which he never paid him?”

“Hiram Bates,” answered Fosdick, in some surprise. “What made you think of him?”

“I thought I remembered the name. He moved out West, didn’t he?”

“So I heard at the time.”
🎧 Includes the full unabridged audiobook (LibriVox recording) along with the ePub.

Description

Mark Manton is a small, thinly dressed match boy who must hand over his day's money to Mother Watson, a drunken woman who has charge of him and beats him when he comes home with too little. Richard Hunter, once Ragged Dick and now a rising young clerk, finds Mark collapsed in the street, takes him home and makes him his ward. Mark gets a place in a bookstore, where he comes under suspicion when money goes missing. Meanwhile Dick is searching New York for the lost grandson of a wealthy Milwaukee man, Mr. Bates.

Published in 1869, Mark the Match Boy is the third book of the Ragged Dick Series. It brings back Dick, Fosdick, Micky Maguire and Roswell Crawford from the earlier books.

Audiobook: unabridged LibriVox recording read by Tori Faulder, about 3 hours 54 minutes, in MP3 format (13 files plus one "download all" ZIP).

EPUB: complete text with a clickable table of contents, the frontispiece and one illustration from early editions. The Art Nouveau cover illustration was made for this edition with AI.
