In a lane in Cairo, Ma‘ruf the cobbler sat outside his little shop. Around him were shoes waiting to be repaired, a sturdy needle, thread, and scraps of leather. He worked from morning until evening, but earned very little.
Ma‘ruf had no fortune, but he had skilful hands and a kind heart. When a poor person brought him a torn shoe, he repaired it as well as he could. It pleased him to see its owner walking comfortably again.
