The Sudan was known to the Egyptians and Hebrews as Kash or Cush, to the Greeks as Ethiopia. In the very dawn of Greek literature we hear in the Iliad how Zeus and the other gods went each year to feast for twelve days among “the blameless Ethiopians,” while the Odyssey represents Poseidon as doing the same upon his own account. From a very early epoch the incense needed for Egyptian worship was brought from Southern Arabia to the African coast, whence it was carried through the land of Punt to Kash and Egypt. Along the same road travelled also the logs of Sudanese ebony, so greatly prized by the Egyptians, which grows along the upper course of the Blue Nile.

First published in 1911, John Garstang’s landmark volume gathers the results of the Liverpool expedition’s 1909–1910 season. It moves from the wider history of Kush to detailed accounts of the Amon, Isis, Lion, and Sun temples, then into burial customs, ceramics, small finds, and early attempts to decipher Meroitic writing.
