On the sidewalk in front of the “Times” office, facing Printing-House Square, stood a boy of fifteen, with a pile of morning papers under his arm.

“‘Herald,’ ‘Times,’ ‘Tribune,’ ‘World’!” he vociferated, with a quick glance at each passer-by.
🎧 Includes the full unabridged audiobook (LibriVox recording) along with the ePub.

Description

Rufus, known to the other newsboys as Rough and Ready, sells papers outside the Times office in Printing-House Square. He works to keep himself and his little sister Rose, and to keep her away from their drunken stepfather, James Martin, who once took and sold the clothes Rufus had bought her. Rufus moves Rose to a safe home with a kind seamstress and sleeps at the Newsboys' Lodging House himself. Then Martin finds Rose and carries her off, and Rufus and his friend Ben set out to find her.

Published in 1869, Rough and Ready; or, Life Among the New York Newsboys is the fourth book of the Ragged Dick Series. Its story continues in Rufus and Rose, also available at Nile Book Store.

Audiobook: unabridged LibriVox recording read by Tori Faulder, about 4 hours 13 minutes, in MP3 format (13 files plus one "download all" ZIP).

EPUB: complete text with a clickable table of contents, the frontispiece and two illustrations from the 1897 Porter & Coates edition. The Art Nouveau cover illustration was made for this edition with AI.
