Spy Smasher first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 alongside Captain Marvel, making him one of Fawcett's founding heroes. Alan Armstrong, a wealthy aviator, battled Nazi spies and enemy agents in some of the most patriotic wartime comics ever published. So popular he starred in a 1942 Republic Pictures film serial. Only 11 issues were published (1941–1943), making each one genuinely scarce.
