When the Mahdist revolt cut Equatoria off from the north, Emin Pasha and the province under his administration became isolated beyond the reach of Khartoum. A.-J. Wauters places Henry M. Stanley's controversial relief expedition inside that larger history, tracing events from the conquest of Sudan and Gordon's death through Bahr el-Ghazal, Equatoria, the Congo route and the eventual retreat to Zanzibar.
This lavishly illustrated 1890 account combines political and military history, geography, expedition narrative and portraits of the people at its centre. The Mahdist forces barred the northern approach, powerful kingdoms complicated the eastern and southern roads, and the western country remained largely unknown. The expedition therefore faced a choice that would shape every hardship and discovery that followed.
