The Book of Khalid

The Book of Khalid (1911) by Ameen Rihani is widely regarded as the first novel written in English by an Arab-American author. Illustrated in its original edition by Rihani's close friend Khalil Gibran, this semi-autobiographical work follows two young men, Khalid and Shakib, from a Lebanese mountain village to the streets of Lower Manhattan as peddlers, and back again to the Middle East amid the upheavals of the Young Turk Revolution. Its blend of transcendentalist philosophy, satire, and reflections on East and West is thought to have influenced Gibran's own later masterpiece, The Prophet.
