In 1877–78, at the invitation of the Khedive of Egypt, Isma'il Pasha, the explorer and orientalist Sir Richard F. Burton led an expedition into the Midian region of north-western Arabia in search of the ancient gold mines described in classical and medieval sources. This 1878 account combines travelogue, geological and archaeological survey, and ethnography of the Bedouin tribes he encountered, with detailed notes on the region's ruined Midianite cities, ancient inscriptions, botany, and natural history.
This edition was digitized directly from the original 1878 scan held by the Princeton Theological Seminary Library (via the Internet Archive) and carefully cleaned and reformatted by Nile Book Store — it is not a reprint of any existing clean digital edition.
Author
Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821–1890) was a British explorer, writer, orientalist, and diplomat, famous for his disguised pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, his translation of the Arabian Nights, and his expeditions across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
