Description
The History of the Conquest of Spain preserves one of the oldest surviving Arabic accounts of the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula — written by the Egyptian historian Ibn Abd-el-Hakem (d. 871) barely two centuries after the events themselves. His narrative gives the earliest connected account of Tariq ibn Ziyad's crossing of the strait in 711, the fall of the Visigothic kingdom under King Roderic, and the campaigns of Musa ibn Nusayr that brought Spain under Muslim rule — a foundational source behind nearly every later history of Islamic Iberia.
This edition presents John Harris Jones's 1858 English translation, originally prepared as a doctoral dissertation at Göttingen: his historical introduction surveying the sources and controversies of the period, followed by his complete translation of Ibn Abd-el-Hakem's chronicle of the conquest. Jones's original edition also included an extensive apparatus of critical and exegetical notes alongside the parallel Arabic text, aimed at specialist Orientalist readers; this Nile Book Store edition omits that apparatus to present the introduction and narrative translation as a readable whole.
