Description
105 selected plates from David Roberts's celebrated lithographs The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia (London, 1842–1849). Roberts, a Scottish painter, travelled through Egypt, Nubia, Sinai, Petra, Palestine and Lebanon in 1838–39; the lithographer Louis Haghe turned his drawings into tinted plates that became the best-known images of the Middle East of their century. This edition presents Jerusalem, Galilee, the Syrian coast and Baalbek; Petra and Mount Sinai; and Egypt and Nubia, from the Pyramids, Luxor and Karnak to Abu Simbel, Philae and Mamluk Cairo. Each plate appears full-page with the English title printed on it, scanned from the Smithsonian Libraries copies (Day & Son printing, 1855–56).
