The full African moon poured down its light from the blue sky into the open plain. It fell on the gravel plain and the scattered round stone-kopjes, on the flat-roofed farmhouse, on the walls of the kraals, on the plumed heads of the tall ostriches, and the big horns of the slow-moving cattle, who were taking the last mouthful before the morning star should summon them to sleep; it fell on the two who were walking slowly, hand in hand.

The Story of an African Farm (1883) is Olive Schreiner's groundbreaking novel set on an isolated farm in the Karoo region of South Africa. Published under the pseudonym Ralph Iron, it follows three children — Waldo, Em, and Lyndall — from childhood into adulthood as they grapple with faith, doubt, love, and the constraints placed on women in Victorian society.

Widely regarded as one of the first major feminist novels in English and a landmark of South African literature, the book's frank treatment of free thought, gender equality, and women's independence shocked and captivated readers on publication. Lyndall's fierce refusal to accept the limited roles offered to her remains one of the most striking portraits of female independence in 19th-century fiction.
