Through the Dark Continent (1878) is Henry M. Stanley's firsthand account of his epic 999-day, 7,000-mile expedition across equatorial Africa. Volume 2 continues the journey from the great lakes down the uncharted Lualaba River, which Stanley ultimately proved to be the source of the Congo rather than the Nile — a discovery that redrew the map of Africa. The narrative follows the expedition's grueling descent through dense rainforest and past hostile river kingdoms to the Atlantic coast.
Stanley's account combines adventure, geography, and ethnography in one of the defining exploration narratives of the 19th century, documenting the final resolution of the central mysteries of African river geography that had eluded explorers for decades.
