A landmark illustrated journey from Cairo into Nubia and the upper reaches of the Nile.

In 1873–74, novelist, artist, and pioneering Egyptologist Amelia B. Edwards travelled south by dahabeeyah. Her vivid account moves from Cairo and the pyramids through Thebes, Aswan, Philae, Korosko and Abu Simbel to the Second Cataract—combining travel narrative, archaeology, landscape and close observation of nineteenth-century life along the river.

This edition includes: a clean reflowable EPUB, the original illustrations, navigable contents, and a new Nile Book Store cover.

Read an excerpt

“A donkey ride and a boating trip interspersed with ruins” does, in fact, sum up in a single line the whole experience of the Nile traveler. Apropos of these three things—the donkeys, the boat, and the ruins—it may be said that a good English saddle and a comfortable dahabeeyah add very considerably to the pleasure of the journey; and that the more one knows about the past history of the country, the more one enjoys the ruins.

Historical note: This nineteenth-century travel account reflects its author’s period and perspective. It is presented as a primary source and should be read alongside modern Egyptian, Nubian and Sudanese scholarship.
