To students of general literature in Europe and the United States, until within the last few years, the Orientals most celebrated in religion or politics, in literature or learning, were known only by name. The Oriental world, to the student aiming at practical achievements, presented a field of so little promise that he scarcely ever ventured beyond a distant survey of what seemed to him a boundless and impracticable area. But, thanks to the exigencies of commerce, to philanthropic zeal, and to the scientific impulse, the East is daily getting to be "nearer seen and better known," not only in its outward life, but in those special aspects which, in religion and government, in war and policy, differentiate Eastern from Western races.

Christianity, Islam and the Negro Race (1887) is a landmark collection of essays, addresses, and lectures by Edward Wilmot Blyden — the Liberian-American scholar, diplomat, and educator widely regarded as the father of Pan-Africanism. Writing from within the African and Black diaspora experience, Blyden examines how Christianity and Islam each shaped African societies and identity, arguing that Islam had in many respects preserved African dignity and self-governance more successfully than the colonial Christianity imposed by Europeans.

Drawing on his own travels across West Africa and the Middle East, his correspondence with African and European intellectuals, and his deep engagement with both religious traditions, Blyden constructs one of the earliest sustained arguments for African self-determination and racial pride written by an African author for a global audience. It remains a foundational text in African intellectual history and Pan-African thought.
