The Nellie, a cruising yawl, swung to her anchor without a flutter of the sails, and was at rest. The flood had made, the wind was nearly calm, and being bound down the river, the only thing for it was to come to and wait for the turn of the tide. The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of an interminable waterway.
Joseph Conrad's 1899 novella, one of the most studied and most influential short works in English literature. Sailor Charles Marlow recounts a journey up a great river into the interior of the Congo Free State, sent by his trading company to retrieve the elusive and increasingly unhinged ivory agent Kurtz. Drawing on Conrad's own harrowing experience piloting a steamboat in the Congo, the novella became a searing meditation on colonial brutality, imperial greed, and the darkness beneath the surface of civilization. It later inspired the film Apocalypse Now.
