In 1875, civil engineer F. Sidney Ensor joined an ambitious expedition charged with surveying a railway from the Nile toward El Fasher. His account follows the party from Wadi Halfa through Dongola and across the desert, recording the practical realities of camels, wells, caravan travel, local markets and unfamiliar terrain.
Written with close observation and dry humour, this is both a travel narrative and an unusually detailed document of nineteenth-century Sudan. The Nile Book Store edition preserves the complete 1881 text, all twenty-one chapters, the original decorative artwork and two survey maps.

The expedition moved beyond the familiar Nile route into country seldom described by European travellers, carrying its instruments, stores and hopes of a railway across the desert by camel.
