In the 1870s, civil engineer F. Sidney Ensor joined a survey for a proposed railway from Old Dongola through the Wadi al-Milk to El Fasher. His 1881 narrative records the route, desert travel, wells, markets, caravan logistics and encounters across Nubia, Kordofan and Darfur.
