After several years of travel, four of them spent in Egypt, I arrived in Paris at the end of February 1819. I had been fortunate enough to make a number of discoveries in that classical land. The welcome I received from the government and from members of the institutes of France and Egypt inspired in me a strong desire to attempt discoveries of still greater importance.

I therefore resolved to see once more that beautiful Egyptian sky, which I had left only to embrace my parents after nine full years of separation. In April 1819, the Minister of the Interior gave me instructions to return to Egypt.
