The area at present known as Kordofán may very roughly be divided into three parallel latitudinal belts: the southern mountains; the central and comparatively fertile district; and the rough open wastes of the north. Of the circumstances prevailing in Kordofán in the time of the Pharaohs we know nothing and can guess but little. The data available for determining the state of the Sudan as a whole in those dim days is very scanty, but such as we have is often applicable to Kordofán as much as to any other part of the country.

MacMichael surveys the historical traditions of communities across northern and central Kordofan, from the Dagu and Bedayria to Dar Hamid, the Bakkara groupings, Hamar, Kababish, Kawahla, and others. The appendices examine the name Kordofan, the Fung, stories of Abu Zayd al-Hilali, and objects recovered at Faragab.
