I had been received by Livingstone when I first arrived in Africa with something more than the ordinary kindness and sympathy of one traveller for another; and his generous, open-hearted treatment of me, a stranger, and one who had no claim whatever upon him except such as the common brotherhood of men requires, had left on my memory a feeling and an impression of the most profound gratitude. His death affected me, as the loss of a dear relation or friend might have done; and when the first indefinite sense of the bereavement had passed somewhat away, there arose in me a sense of the responsibility that this loss had laid upon me.

Through the Dark Continent (1878) is Henry M. Stanley's firsthand account of his epic 999-day, 7,000-mile expedition across equatorial Africa — one of the most celebrated exploration narratives of the Victorian age. Volume 1 opens with Stanley's resolve to complete the unfinished work of David Livingstone, traces the organization of his expedition, and follows his party as they map the great equatorial lakes and search for the true sources of the Nile.

Stanley's vivid, often harrowing narrative combines geography, ethnography, and high adventure, documenting encounters with African kingdoms, brutal river crossings, and the drive to resolve one of the 19th century's greatest geographic mysteries. It remains a landmark primary source for the history of African exploration.
