An extraordinary 1833 journey through Nubia and Sudan to the ancient kingdom of Meroë—documented with a map and approximately ninety original plates.

Artist and traveller George Alexander Hoskins set out from the Nile valley determined to record the monuments above the Second Cataract. Crossing the Nubian Desert and travelling through Dongola, Berber, Gebel Barkal and Meroë, he documented pyramids, temples, inscriptions, landscapes and communities encountered along the route.

First published in 1835, this substantial account combines an expedition narrative with one of the richest visual records of nineteenth-century travel in Sudan. The historical title uses “Ethiopia” in its older geographical sense for the lands south of Egypt, especially Nubia and ancient Meroë.
