The death of my parents in 1812 placed me upon an entirely different course from the one for which my early education had prepared me. At seventeen I was compelled to interrupt my academic studies and enter commerce, whose narrow routine answered so little to my inclinations. Six of the finest years of my youth passed in occupations that held no meaning for me, until uncertain health obliged me to travel to Italy.
